In 1920, Nuqallaq, an Inuk from Pond Inlet killed a white trader, Henry James, in order to protect the families of hunters the White Man threatened to kill; although the Inuk had act in self-defense following the Inuit customs, this event triggered the first murder trial ever held by Canadian authorities in the Arctic sentencing the first Inuk to jail, and the irreversible disruption in the life of his people.
